Today, Cool.fm maintains a compact selection of links to internet radio stations
and other audio streams. We try to follow the ethos of the absent DJ Zellers and his belief that the
delivery of music broadcast should never be interfered with by advertisers or "spoken word"
budgets set by radio authorities. To use his words: "The DJ and listener
relationship should be wherever possible, a harmonious freeform interaction
unhindered by aggressive audio advertising or station managers with padded
brown envelopes in their back pockets."
In the 1990s, Cool FM was an active pirate radio station situated at the
summit of a hill in rural Derbyshire, England.
Established and run by DJ Zellers, Cool FM (also known as CFM)
transmitted at the far end of the FM dial on 108Mhz and operated from Alport Heights, one of the highest vantage points outside the city of
Derby.
By having its transmitter antennae cunningly situated amongst other more
legitimate equipment in the area, Cool FM successfully avoided detection
from the authorities and enjoyed an almost uninterrupted service during its
lifetime.
In stark contrast to its beautifully green and tranquil English countryside
setting, CFM broadcast the latest thumping dance tunes to hit the back
street record stores of dreary inner city England. Its instant popularity
with the local youth ensured it became Derbyshire's very own tannoy system
for the evolving dance music revolution and provided Ravers/Partygoers in
the region with an invaluable service.
